General:
Futurewise is the only statewide organization in Washington whose mission is bringing citizens to-gether to manage growth and stop sprawl. Through grassroots organizing and advocacy, we work to protect Washington’s farms, forests, and rural areas from the destructive impacts of irresponsible de-velopment while making our towns and cities better places to live. Futurewise promotes livable com-munities by encouraging and supporting the development of compact, transit-friendly, and walkable neighborhoods.
Futurewise Whatcom was formed in February, 2007 as an official chapter of the Seattle-based non-profit organization. FWW currently has a Steering Committee of eight engaged local activists.
The primary goal of FWW is to minimize urbanization of Whatcom County. This includes opposing unwarranted expansion of existing incorporated and unincorporated urban areas, creation of new urban areas, and any developments which are not essentially rural in character. It also includes efforts to pre-serve agricultural, forest and resource lands, as well as wildlife habitat, and open space.
A secondary goal of Futurewise Whatcom is creation of compact, livable cities. We promote smart-growth practices that concentrate development inside existing city boundaries. Such developments em-phasize mixed uses in each neighborhood so that people can easily travel from home to work, school, medical facilities, shopping, libraries, parks, and other public places without using motor vehicles.
This high-energy job supports our advocacy and organizing efforts to protect our county and the natural environment by working with local members and activists.
Primary Qualifications:
• Energy, enthusiasm, and self-motivation.
• Outreach and grassroots organizing experience.
• Strong written and verbal communications skills.
• Excellent interpersonal relations skills.

• Demonstrated ability to prioritize, manage, and coordinate multiple tasks.
• Proficient computer skills.

• Media and communications experience.
• Familiarity with and commitment to land use and environmental issues.
• Non-profit experience.
