Priorities
For the past 15 years Futurewise, formerly 1000 Friends of Washington, has worked with decision-makers to develop smart plans for their communities, organized and educated citizens to be effective advocates and ensured that local governments are accountable to citizens, not irresponsible developers.
Futurewise's work focuses on strategic programs aimed at protecting and improving our quality of life in Washington state.
Program Areas
Local Advocacy - Most land use decisions are made at the local level. That is why Futurewise works with local groups and citizens in counties around the state to make sure our elected officials are making smart choices for our communities.
State Legislature - This legislative session provides a unique opportunity to build from the successful campaign against I-933 and impact communities around the state.
Transportation - A transportation network that includes transportation choices is essential to keep people moving. It also has a major effect on land use patterns and sprawl.
Great Cities - Futurewise advocates for communities that provide a mix of housing, parks, sidewalks and local businesses to create vibrant, liveable communities.
In the News - One of the ways we work to protect open spaces and farmland, and to build great communities is to ensure important issues are covered in the news.
Futurewise uses a variety of techniques to address each of these issues. They include:
- Education and outreach to the media
- Local organizing around growth issues
- State and regional policy
- Legal action
