Field Director - Job Description

Cleaning Puget Sound. Reducing WA’s climate impact. Increasing transportation choices. Protecting local farms from irresponsible development.   Creating affordable communities. These are some of the biggest decisions Washington will make in the coming decades – be a part of it.

Futurewise, a statewide public interest organization, seeks a smart, energetic Field Director to bring citizens together to manage growth and stop sprawl.  The Field Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for overseeing design and implementation of all aspects of the field program; managing field staff, expanding our network of activists, activating input on important state and local decisions, and implementing focused organizing projects targeting specific areas and decisions.

Futurewise
Futurewise, formerly 1000 Friends of Washington, is the only statewide organization in Washington whose mission is to promote healthy communities and cities while protecting working farms, forests, and shorelines from the destructive impacts of irresponsible over-development.

Millions more people are moving to Washington in the coming decade.  In the face of climate change, Futurewise is leading state efforts to ensure that Washington accommodates a growing population in ways that reduce driving and meet the growing demand for green, walkable communities.

Futurewise has a twenty member volunteer Board of Directors and eleven staff including the Field Director.  Futurewise was founded in 1990 as the 1000 Friends of Washington.

Responsibilities:

- Manage statewide field staff in Whatcom, Snohomish, and Spokane Counties.
- Work with policy and political staff to develop, implement and evaluate field and outreach plans for state and local campaigns. 
- Build and engage our activist network; recruit new activists and members; grow our online activist network.
- Implement focused organizing projects targeting specific areas and local decisions. 
- Creatively leverage the grassroots power of coalition organizations and existing activist communities.
- Provide advice and assistance to local groups working on growth management issues around the state.
- Track local land use decisions in key cities or counties around the state.

Primary Qualifications:

- At least 3 years of field and outreach experience in electoral, issue and/or legislative campaigns.
- Staff management experience.
- Experience in developing effective field strategies and plans for legislative, electoral, or issue campaigns.
- The desire to manage and grow one of the strongest field programs in Washington State.
- Flexibility and willingness to work evenings and weekends.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize, manage, and coordinate multiple tasks.
- Proficient computer skills.

Secondary Qualifications:

- Media and communications experience.
- Familiarity with land use and environmental issues.
- Non-profit experience.
